MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Marquette University (MU) police are investigating after a student was robbed and sexually assaulted early Wednesday morning, Feb. 18.
The suspect approached the victim just before 2 a.m. near 14th St. and Kilbourn Avenue and displayed a weapon, according to university police.
"It's just kind of scary, just because you hear this and think that could have been anyone. It's just one of those things that's kind of a wakeup call," said MU student Regan Gospodarek.
Officials describe the suspect as a 5'10"-6' tall Black male in his 20s-30s, with black, shoulder-length hair -or twists in his hair- and a slim build. He was wearing a dark beige hoodie, blue medical face mask, light-colored pants, and white shoes. They say he fled northbound on 14th St. on foot.
"That could have been me, that could have been one of my friends, that's just not something particularly a woman wants to see. It definitely wasn't a great start to my day," said MU student Ellie Golko.
CBS 58 saw investigators in the area all day, along with police K-9s. Police would not tell us what they were looking for but the dogs are trained to find electronic devices like phones, SD cards or hard drives.
The school released a statement Wednesday, saying the victim was taken to the hospital for treatment and is getting holistic support.
Many students say seeing the incident alert Wednesday morning made them feel uneasy.
"I first looked at the location and was like, oh, that's really close to the house I'm in off campus, and I was a little scared because we do get safety alerts semi-frequently," MU student Ellie Golko said. "This is not the first armed robbery, but I saw sexual assault in the title and that just made my heart drop."
MUPD obtained the below video of the suspect from a security camera on campus.
Marquette University also sent out a list of resources and support for students.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Marquette University Police Department at 414-288-6800.
