Milwaukee actor and filmmaker shares how new state film tax credit program will impact their Sherman Park centered film

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) – The Hollywood producers who take summer vacations in Wisconsin could now have an incentive to shoot their movies here, according to Governor Tony Evers and Milwaukee-based filmmakers.

Evers visited Nō Studios in Milwaukee to highlight the launch of Wisconsin’s new film office, Film Wisconsin, and the state’s new film tax credit program. A part of the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, Film Wisconsin administers $5 million in film tax credits annually to assist production infrastructure.

Milwaukee Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs previously said Wisconsin began a film tax incentive program in 2008 which was discontinued in 2013.

“It just kind of fell apart, we’re not going to let that happen this time,” Evers said. “I think $5 million dollars a year is a good start, but because it had good support this time and they’ll have good stories to tell, it’ll slowly increase.”

Paulina Lule Bugembe-Kuwahara is a Milwaukee born-and-raised actor and filmmaker currently working on a project titled "Sherman Park."

“It’s a zombie horror film that is an allegory about recidivism in Milwaukee.” Bugembe-Kuwahara said. “While I was in Los Angeles is when I actually wrote this project. A big struggle I kind of ran into while I was over there was I was adamant about it being not only set in Milwaukee but also filmed in Milwaukee, and a big struggle was the fact that Wisconsin didn't have film incentives. That’s usually a non-starter.”

Bugembe-Kuwahara said the new tax credit program will bring new life to their zombie film.

“I think these tax incentives will be a really great opportunity for the world to see what our state has to offer,” Bugembe-Kuwahara.
