FRANKLIN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The first Costco in Milwaukee County could be on its way.
Thursday night, the City of Franklin's planning commission unanimously approved a proposal for Costco to develop a 162,000-square-foot facility. The new location on 27th and Drexel would also have tire sales and a gas station.
Construction could begin as early as next year if the City of Franklin’s Common Council approves the location.
“If it brings in more business and more jobs for people, I think it’s a great thing,” said Michelle Ceman, shopper.
Currently, the closest Costco to Milwaukee County is located in New Berlin. CBS 58 reached out to Costco for comment, but the retailer said they do not comment about future locations.
As for nearby shoppers, it seems nearly everyone is excited about the new development, including the City of Franklin's mayor, who told CBS 58 over the phone his constituents are looking forward to the big bulk store's opening. In fact, we couldn’t find anyone opposed to it.
“Limiting factor in me not actually going to a Costco myself is that they are so darn far away. Maybe I will start and get my own membership now that there’s one coming here,” said shopper Steven Bertelsen.
The Common Council has until Sep. 9 to approve the lot for the future Costco.
