Milwaukee County Parks pushing for funding to fix Sheridan Park bluff

CUDAHY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A recent storm has continued the erosion occurring at Sheridan Park bluff, which has led to a drop-off getting closer to a Cudahy neighborhood.

“What’s unique about this area is that we have nearby residential homes, and so obviously the concern is different,” Milwaukee County Parks Director of Planning Sarah Toomsen said.

Toomsen was in Cudahy on Tuesday night for a town hall meeting attended by dozens of residents.

Despite trees falling and parts of the bluff falling into Lake Michigan, the storm did not have a major impact.

"We do think that was a minor impact to the toe of the bluff, but nonetheless, the view that people see has changed, and so it’s also heightened their awareness of what’s happening at the Sheridan bluffs,” Toomsen said.

People living nearby, who walk along the beach and Oak Leaf Trail, are concerned about the changes.

“You're kind of always looking up and seeing what’s going on,” Cudahy resident Jay Skoglund said. “Especially after it rains, that’s the scary part.”

Milwaukee County Parks is working on a bluff stabilization project that would help slow down the erosion.

“Any project that we would do would probably focus on that bottom portion of the bluff,” Toomsen said. “Hardening the toe or the bottom of the slope against the wave action that Lake Michigan brings to the shore.”

The project would cost around $23 million, money the parks department does not have.

“We of course have it in our 2027 capital request that will go to the county board and the county executive,” Toomsen said. “I think the clock is ticking.”
