Milwaukee families gear up for school year at Back to School Festival

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee families got ready for the start of the school year by celebrating on Sunday, Aug. 30 at the fourth annual Back to School Festival, hosted by Milwaukee Police Department District 7 and Ald. Mark Chambers at Indigenous Peoples' Park.

The event included free food, health and wellness vendors, a bike raffle and haircuts. Students received free backpacks and school supplies on a first-come, first-served basis.

"It's just our way to say thanks for having a safe summer, but also just making sure to let the kids know that we are here and we are supporting them and set them up for, you know, a great back to school," said Chambers.

Milwaukee students return to classrooms on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
