MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Recreation held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday morning for the Milwaukee Recreation Community Center and Browning Playfield redevelopment.

This is located on the northwest side of the city near 76th and Silver Spring. It's also part of Milwaukee Recreation's long-term "Dream, Build, Play" initiative.

They say with this new facility, they'll be able to fill a number of recreation, wellness, and sports programming needs for community members of all ages and abilities.

"In 2019, I was asked by then-recreational director Lynn Greb to conduct a feasibility study for a north side community center," said Andrew Rossa, interim director of Milwaukee Rec. "The department had recently completed a needs assessment and based on community feedback, community centers and aquatic facilities were the top two priorities of our department. This new facility will now meet both those top priorities for the community."

The new community center will replace two vacant buildings, along with the existing outdoor space, with new indoor and outdoor recreational amenities.

Construction is expected to be completed in early 2027.
