CBS 58 MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Customers impacted by a January U-Haul Storage Facility could soon see what remains of their belongings.
"There was heavy fire damage to buildings H and C where the majority of the fire was," said Benjamin Milison, U-Haul Regional President.
The fire happened in Milwaukee's Walker's Point near 1st and Orchard.
"Building H however had about 200 some rooms that were affected," said Milison.
While building C was mostly unused space, the nearly 200 units in building H were full of people's personal belongings, now ruined by the damage.
"The fire was high up the roof kind of collapsed onto the upper level of the units. The water damage put on it by the first responders there was significant damage to that area," said Milison.
About 400 of the 1,200 self-storage units are covered in soot. U-Haul says parts of the facility, building C and H, will be demolished and rebuilt.
U-Haul says crews are clearing debris around building H, which had about 272 storage units affected by the fire.
"We are making that safe and we are trying to give everyone an opportunity to come in and look through their unit to see what is able to be removed from their unit. And before we do any kind of demo to that building alone, we want to make sure we give people that opportunity," said Milison.
However, families are getting anxious to see what remains of their possessions.
"Patience only goes so far and I do appreciate people's patience as we work through the problems and hiccups we have. Theres a lot of moving parts to all of it and each part has to move a little bit more for the next part to move we are just trying to work through that as fast as we possibly can," said Milison.
U-Haul says once the debris is cleared, they plan on contacting impacted customers in the next few weeks.
Milison says they don't know when they will be back to full operations.
