Milwaukee's K-pop scene to be celebrated with K-pop Night in Greenfield

GREENFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The growing adoration for K-pop, the globally loved genre of pop music out of Korea, has fostered its own community of fans and participants in the genre and its subculture. It will be on full display during a weekend event featuring dance crews, vendors and activities in Greenfield.

K-pop Night, hosted by the local dance crew Girly Pop, will take place on Saturday, June 22 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Blüm Coffee Garden within Bluemel's Landscape Center in Greenfield. Girly Pop is known for having performed at venues such as Turner Hall, UW-Milwaukee, Marquette University, X-Ray Arcade, as well as festivals across the state.

Participants include not only Girly Pop, but also Madison-based MkeMe Crew, Chicago-based Twins But Not Really, Ecliypse, Hunter Ho and Valerie Arroyo. There will also be a collaboration piece between KOMET, Girly Pop and MkeMe.

Attendees can join the Random Dance Play, a popular K-pop fan activity for fans who are ready to put their dancing, and knowledge of K-pop choreography, to the test.

Merchandise vendors at the event will include Tiny J Shop, Alondra's Crafty Mischief, Ounce of Sunset Tulips, Yenni's Warehouse, plus merchandise and a fundraiser for Girly Pop.

There will also be a trading card station where fans can exchange K-pop idol photo cards.

Girly Pop tells CBS 58 that Milwaukee's K-pop scene is experiencing significant growth, allowing their dance crew to grow despite not charging members for anything other than studio time. The group makes an effort to celebrate inclusion, allowing participants of all ages to join. Local fashion designer MISHKA will be dressing the crew for one of their stages.

Admission to K-Pop Night is free to all ages, and special coffee, tea and sodas will be available to celebrate the event.
