'Most important election': Campaign teams for Wisconsin Supreme Court race push to reach voters before Tuesday

 

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- With only two days left until Election Day, campaign teams for the Wisconsin Supreme Court race spent the weekend out in full force, attempting to spread their messages to voters.

These last-ditch efforts are especially important in the upcoming election, as political experts project the race will be close.

Liberal-backed candidate Janet Protasiewicz and conservative-supported candidate Daniel Kelly are facing off in the most expensive Supreme Court race in the country, ever -- making the 48 hours before Tuesday a fight to the finish line in the battleground state.

On Sunday, April 2, Kelly spent hours speaking with supporters as part of his "Save the Court" tour.

During his meeting with voters at the GOP headquarters in West Allis, Kelly told CBS 58 he wants constituents to get out and vote.

“We want to preserve our Constitutional heritage for the next generation and each generation has the responsibility to make that choice," Kelly said. “They have a tendency to start focusing in on elections in the last couple of days. I think they’re turning their minds to it now, making up their decision about what they want on their Supreme Court.”

That decision could impact millions as voters have the power to determine whether liberals or conservatives control the majority and decide abortion rights in Wisconsin.

Earlier this weekend, former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder spoke with CBS 58 during a canvass kick-off for Protasiewicz.

“This is the most important election in 2023 because this is among the most gerrymandered states in the country, and if we reverse that here, it will send out a notice to other states that are similarly gerrymandered that we’re going to do all that we can to make sure that the system is fair," Holder said.

Sunday marked Kelly's last stop in Milwaukee County before Tuesday.

CBS 58 had also planned to attend Protasiewicz's events on Sunday, but she fell ill, according to her campaign team.

It currently remains unclear if she will resume her events on Monday.
