MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee Police Officer arrested for an OWI eight years ago is up for a promotion.
Lieutenant John Corbett was drunk when he let his then 13-year-old daughter drive in 2010.
The Milwaukee Police Department sent a statement on Thursday, saying Corbett immediately entered therapy for alcohol abuse. The lieutenant has now been sober for eight years.
The statement goes on to say that Chief Morales selected Corbett to become a Captain of Police because he's a forward-thinking individual.
Here is the full statement:
"Lieutenant John Corbett’s history was reviewed and considered when he was selected for promotion. It has been well publicized that in 2010 he was arrested for an OWI with his then 13-year-old daughter in the vehicle. Since his arrest he has taken responsibility and ownership of his issues with alcohol and immediately entered therapy. Lieutenant Corbett has now been sober for eight years. He actively educates department members, provides private counseling sessions on alcohol dependency and substance abuse in law enforcement and was a member of the Alcohol Awareness Initiative.
"Chief Morales selected Lieutenant John Corbett to become a Captain of Police because he has shown that he is a forward thinking individual. He has continued his education by earning a Master’s Degree in Management and he possesses great leadership qualities."
