MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson and members of his staff participated in a volunteer day. They helped the regular volunteers who are building what will become an affordable new home for someone.

Brian Sonderman, the CEO of Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity, says they're seeing record interest from people in home ownership this year, and he points to one reason. 

"It's because they're spending way too much on rent; 50, 60, 70% of their income spent on housing means that it's difficult to afford anything else," said Sonderman. 

"I got the chance to swing a hammer for a little bit. I gotta give some kudos to my dad for showing me those tricks back in the day. You don't forget it, it's like riding a bike," said Mayor Johnson. 

According to Mayor Johnson, he knows what he's doing out there. 

We're told that the home, near 6th and Locust, is one of 40 that Milwaukee Habitat is building this year.
