MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) wants to make sure that you celebrate New Year's Eve safely. 

The department posted a video message on their social media, warning about one issue they sometimes face. 

They have seen an increase in people firing shots in the air during the holidays, "when MPD responds it is unknown if shots are being into the air or if an active shooter incident is taking place. The discharge of a firearm has the potential to injure or take someone's life." 

They state that firing a gun, even in celebration, is illegal.
