NOW: Community Projects for Seniors delivers nearly 4,000 hot meals on Easter

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- If you didn't have family close by on Easter how would you have spent the holiday?

That's a question many seniors here in Southeast Wisconsin face.

Community projects for seniors try to address that problem every holiday.

Hundreds of volunteers came together on Easter Morning at Serb Hall to put together thousands of meals for seniors.

"It's amazing just to be able to give back to the community, and we have fun with our family being here, it's a good time with everybody," said Volunteer Amy Foster.

Amy Foster, her mom, the rest of her family say they've been volunteering with community projects for seniors holiday meal deliveries for 7 years.

For Easter this year, the Purpora family, owners and operators of Meyer's and Papa Luigi's, cooked the food.

"For ham we did about a thousand pounds served today for 4,000 people, mac and cheese, we did 1,600 pounds of pasta and cheese, and then for green beans we did about 1,700 pounds of green beans," said Salvatore Purpora, manager at Papa Luigi's.

They served dinner rolls and cornbread as well.

Community Projects for Seniors founder and Executive Director Jeffery Hansen said they're glad to be back to a mostly normal operation after COVID made things more complicated in years past, delivering meals to 8 different Southeast Wisconsin counties.

He said the best part is seeing the meal get delivered.

"When they see a happy volunteer with a smile on their face bringing them a hot meal, it means all the difference in the world," said Hansen.

The meals go to seniors in low-income housing who might otherwise not have a holiday dinner.

James Devial, one person who got a meal Sunday, said without this meal and visit, he would've been sitting around by himself.

"It's very special you know, it's nice that people care, and I really appreciate it, and I'm sure everybody in the building appreciates it," said Devial, "Happy Easter to everybody!"
