MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee lawmakers are encouraging community members to sign up for medical aid.

Open enrollment season for the Affordable Care Act began at the beginning of November.

Local leaders stressed why having coverage is so important and highlighted the best ways to stay connected to the local community for support. They say even though benefits may be at risk, applying is still a necessary step to get financial aid.

"You never know when an illness will strike or when an injury may come about, and so we want to make sure folks are covered," said Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. "But it's important that Congress really gets its act together and really comes together to figure out how we can continue the premium subsidies that many people rely on in order to afford health care."

Right now, over 70,000 people in Milwaukee are living without health care.

If you're looking to apply for support, you still have time. The deadline to apply for aid is Jan. 15 of 2026.
