1 dead, several injured after multi-vehicle crash closes I-43 N for more than 5 hours

OZAUKEE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The sheriff's office has identified the driver killed as 71-year-old Thomas Paine of Johnson Creek.
Officials say those injured include a 29-year-old Racine woman and two 36-year-old men from Chicago.
The 49-year-old driver of the semi-tractor trailer, a West Allis man, was cited for failing to maintain control of a vehicle and illegal crossing of a divided highway.
The sheriff's office says the crash remains under investigation pending results of toxicology testing.
OZAUKEE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- One person is dead, and several others are injured following a multi-vehicle crash along I-43 at State Highway 33 near the Town of Saukville.
Just after 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office responded to a multiple car crash involving a semi tractor-trailer and three vehicles.
The semi was traveling south along I-43 when it lost control, going into the northbound lanes and was struck by two northbound vehicles, a Mercedes Benz Sprinter Van and a Ford Fusion. When the semi came to a rest, it was blocking both northbound lanes and the two vehicles were pinned underneath.
A third car, a Subaru Forester, traveling northbound, also struck the semi and came to a resting point in the gore between I-43 north lanes and the State Highway 33 exit ramp.
The driver of the Mercedes suffered from fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Ford was transported to an area hospital after suffering life-threatening injuries.
The Subaru was carrying three people, who all were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Due to the crash, the I-43 northbound lanes were closed for five and a half hours as first responders worked the scene.
Around 8:35 p.m. the lanes were reopened.

Now on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 26, I-43 northbound is closed to traffic, causing miles of backups.
