"Paying It Forward for John Hetland": Group promotes random acts of kindness

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A new group created to honor fallen Officer John Hetland has taken off in Racine.

The Facebook group is called "Our Hero - Paying It Forward for John Hetland".

The group is encouraging people to perform random acts of kindness in honor of Hetland.

The group's organizers are giving away cards to hand out to recipients of the good deeds, explaining the group's mission and urging them to share their experience on Facebook and keep the movement going.

Written on each card it says, "We encourage you to keep John's contagious love for our community alive and pay it forward for someone else in his honor. If you've been blessed as a recipient of someone paying it forward, share your story on our Facebook page in an effort to heal our community one positive story at a time."

People are paying it forward in all sorts of different ways. One person bought a meal for someone at a local restaurant and another paid for a woman's gas. People are buying groceries, handing out gift cards, free drink tokens, and so on.

The movement started out in Racine, but has since spread throughout Wisconsin. People have even requested cards in Florida, Michigan, and South Carolina.

Locals can pick up cards at Divine Salon and Spa, Teezers Bar, Hiawatha Bar, and The Branch at 1501.

You can also send a message to the Facebook group and request cards in the mail.
