Plot twist: Fans in Milwaukee did not drink for free since Jets won game against Bills

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Just four plays into the NFL season and it all came crashing down when New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a complete tear of his left Achilles tendon--and again, when the Jets ended up winning the game. Many locals who attended Jack's American Pub on Milwaukee's east side may have woken up Tuesday morning to a pretty hefty bar bill.

Turns out, they weren't drinking for free after all.

CBS 58 News spoke to Marcella Dougharty on Tuesday. She worked Monday night while the promotion was underway and said the pub normally gets large crowds during football season but for a Monday -- that was a pretty rowdy night.

"It was weird to see the energy just come up and then go right back down," she explained.

She said the deal they had was a first-of-its kind for the bar. It consisted of an open tab at least 15 minutes before the first kick, no pitchers, top shelf liquor or food and Rodgers had to start the game.

"Obviously, at the beginning when Rodgers went down, they started ordering a lot more, and then once they realized this was a close game and they were tied, it was kind of funny to see, like, for me, making serving drink tickets to no tickets for like 10 minutes," added Dougharty.

Dougharty said during the third quarter, the bar saw few tabs totaling more than $100.

CBS 58 News also got a lot of buzz on the story--both on air and online-- but some of the comments expressed disappointment, saying Jack's promotion was a petty attack on Rodgers for leaving the Packers. Dougharty said she wanted to clarify that there was no hate intended. She believes fans were actually, still rooting for the quarterback.

"We're always rooting for the Packers being [in] the state of Wisconsin, and I would say we were, if anything, rooting for Rodgers yesterday, we want to see him doing good on his new team, the Jets won, so did we, but if the Jets lose, so did you," she said.

Dougharty said she truly believes people were cheering for the free drinks rather than Rodgers' injury.

Jack's American Pub could keep the promotion going for the whole season, they are trying to figure out how all of that will work now that Rodgers will miss the rest of the season.
