BROOKFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Authorities are investigating a murder-suicide that took place Wednesday, Aug. 30 in Brookfield.

According to the Brookfield Police Department, it happened on Apple Tree Lane, located off Greenfield Avenue. Police say around 2:40 p.m. officers arrived at the scene and located a victim with gunshot wounds and pronounced them dead at the scene.

The lone suspect -- identified as a 35-year-old Menomonee Falls man -- was located around 5:30 p.m. deceased from self-inflicted injuries in the parking lot of Orchard Lane Elementary School in New Berlin. Officials do not believe the school was any sort of target or association in the investigation.

The victim and suspect involved were known to each other, according to police. Authorities say there is no threat to the community.

One neighbor CBS 58 spoke with believes the two people involved to be a couple she saw arguing earlier in the week.

"Two days ago, I was in the kitchen, washing dishes, I heard a noise, and I thought it was kids fighting. I jumped out and it was not a noise from kids, it was noise from adults. I see a woman and a man behind her, running," Resident Voulaka Travas said. "It shouldn't have happened. It's very sad."

Again, police have not confirmed how the victim and the suspect knew each other.
