Prime time to see the Perseids, but Northern Lights seem to be stealing the show

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58)--The time is now for viewing the Perseid meteor showers, but another natural phenomenon appears to be taking main stage, the Northern Lights.  We had quite a show in May.  But now it seems to be act two.  According to spaceweather.com, we had numerous Coronal Mass Ejections, or CMEs, over the weekend.  These are large expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun's corona.  They can reach our planet in as little as 15 to 18 hours.  Think of it as a massive geomagnetic storm. The forecast is looking good for another good showing overnight tonight.  It's best to get away from city lights for the best viewing, especially after 10 p.m.

Here are just a few of the pictures sent to us overnight.  We want to see your photos.  Send them to [email protected] or via our CBS 58 mobile weather app.

And if you're lucky enough, you might see the Perseids.  I'm told you could possibly see dozens upon dozens of these shooting stars too.  Tonight probably is your last best opportunity before the curtains go up on this great show from Mother Nature.
