MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson welcomed some special guests from the Milwaukee Department of Public Works on Wednesday, including a puppy whose rescue has captured attention far beyond Wisconsin.
PJ, the department's newest four-legged team member, was found by two sanitation workers while they were on their collection route. Officials said the abandoned puppy, who was malnourished at the time, was spotted just before it would have been crushed by a garbage truck's compactor.
After being rescued, PJ found a permanent home with one of the department's supervisors.
The mayor's office praised the sanitation workers' quick thinking and compassion.
"This story has made waves far beyond even Wisconsin borders, yet it is just one moment amongst innumerable moments that our DPW crews have demonstrated outstanding care and dedication, working to make our city run right, even for our fuzziest surprise guests along the way," the mayor's office said.
