Racine & Me: How Mahjong Is Bringing People Together in Racine
RACINE, WIS (CBS 58) -- American Mahjong is really taking off in Racine, and we’ve already taught or played with close to 1,000 people locally, which has been incredible to see. Both Amy Schaal and Kara Kading joined us in studio to talk more about the craze.
I started the Wisco Mahjong Club because I wanted to create a fun, welcoming space for people to connect. And that’s exactly what’s happening. People come in not knowing anyone, and they leave with new friendships.
We offer something for everyone. We have free open play on Sundays at the Milaegers Farmers Market, and free open play on Tuesday nights at Oakfire in Racine and Kenosha.
For beginners, we have a Mahjong 101 class on Sunday, April 12th, and a special class to learn the new 2026 Mahjong card on Wednesday, April 22nd, with two different session options.
We also just launched our first league, and it’s been so much fun. We’re starting a new beginner friendly Monday league with the 2026 card on April 27th, running through May.
We keep things fresh with themed nights, fun prizes, and different ways to make each event feel like an experience.
At the end of the day, this has become more than just a place to play Mahjong. It’s a place where people can show up, learn something new, and feel connected. And I think that’s exactly why Mahjong is growing so quickly here in Racine.
