Racine & Me: Safe Water in Mind – Honoring Loss, Protecting the Future
SWIM Racine RACINE, WI (CBS 58) -- Racine County’s identity is shaped by water. With 17 lakes, two major rivers, countless ponds, Quarry Lake Park, and the vast shoreline of Lake Michigan, these waterways are a source of beauty, recreation, drinking water, and economic opportunity.
But they also demand respect.
In 2025, Racine is grieving the heartbreaking loss of two children—Shaylani and Marquee—who drowned in the waters of Lake Michigan. Their lives will not be forgotten. Out of their tragedy, a movement is growing to make sure no family endures this kind of pain again.
That movement is SWIM Racine – Safe Water In Mind.
What is SWIM Racine?
SWIM Racine is a community-driven coalition of residents, city and county leaders, and corporate partners united by one mission:
To ensure every Racine County resident has access to water safety education and that local waterways are equipped to prevent loss of life.
Their Mission in Action
SWIM Racine’s efforts focus on four core goals:
-
Water Safety Education — Bringing life-saving information to schools, families, and community centers year-round.
-
Public Safety Events — Hosting hands-on demonstrations, workshops, and shoreline safety days to empower families.
-
Access to Safety Gear — Making sure life jackets, rescue equipment, and safety signage are available where they’re needed most.
-
Government Collaboration — Working side-by-side with city and county officials to identify high-risk areas and create real, lasting solutions.
Why It Matters
Our lakes and rivers should be places of joy—not danger. Through education, preparation, and community action, SWIM Racine is turning heartbreak into hope, ensuring that Racine’s waters are enjoyed safely, respectfully, and confidently by all.
