Racine seeking volunteers for Community Camera Program

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The City of Racine is seeking applicants for the Community Camera Program, aimed at enhancing neighborhood safety by encouraging residents and businesses to install security cameras.

The program offers reimbursements of up to $150 for homeowners and $250 for businesses within the city.

Participants will maintain full control over their video footage but must provide access to the Racine Police Department upon request for criminal investigations.

Racine Police Chief Alexander Ramirez said in a Tuesday, May 14 press release, "The use of technology such as security cameras has, in general, been found to reduce and deter crime overall. The Community Camera Program is another way for residents to participate in improving security to their neighborhood."

Properties with building code violations or tax liens are not eligible for the program, and properties with existing cameras can register with RPD to ensure as many cameras are available during investigations as possible.

Funding for the program is provided by the Department of Community Safety through American Rescue Plan Act funds. Applications can be submitted online via the City of Racine website.
