Bucks adding Kyle Kuzma, sending Khris Middleton to Wizards in trade
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Bucks have traded Khris Middleton to the Washington Wizards in a deal that brings Kyle Kuzma to Milwaukee, according to sources. The Bucks are also sending AJ Johnson and a future pick swap, while the Wizards also send Patrick Baldwin Jr. and second-round draft considerations.
Middleton arrived in Milwaukee via a trade on July 31, 2013 in a deal with Brandon Knight and Viacheslav Kravtsov that sent Brandon Jennings to the Detroit Pistons.
The second-round pick in the 2012 draft then turned into one of the most important Bucks in franchise history.
Middleton became a three-time All-Star and the franchise leader in three-pointers made and attempted. He is third all-time in Bucks' points with 12,586 behind Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
During the 2020-21 postseason, Middleton averaged 23.6 points per game with 7.6 rebounds and 5.1 assists. Middleton had several moments as the closer for the Bucks including a game-winner in Game 1 of the Miami Heat series, or a crucial bucket in overtime of Game 7 in Brooklyn, to leading the Bucks without Giannis against the Atlanta Hawks in Game 5 and 6, to dropping a game-high 40 points in Game 4 of the NBA Finals.
The following season, Middleton suffered a knee injury against the Chicago Bulls in Game 2 of the First Round series and missed the rest of the postseason.
Middleton has been dealing with lower body injuries on and off since playing in 111 of 246 possible games since the 2022-23 season. He has played in all 11 postseason games the last two seasons.
Entering this year, Middleton missed 21 games due to bilateral ankle surgery. He's started 7 games, coming off the bench in 16 games. Middleton has as many 20-point games this season as games under 10 points, including three games where he went scoreless.
Middleton is owed $31.6 million this season with a $34 million dollar player option next season. This move puts the Bucks under the NBA's salary cap second apron and makes them more flexible with the trade deadline looming on Feb. 6.
Kyle Kuzma won an NBA title with the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA bubble in 2020. Playing for a Washington Wizards team with the worst record in the NBA at 8-41, the 29-year-old is averaging 15.2 points per game with a career low 42% field goal, and 28.1% from three-point range.
Patrick Baldwin Jr, the former Sussex Hamilton and UWM product, is still finding his way in the league, mostly coming off the bench during his two seasons in Washington.
