Residents encouraged to review their case as extra FoodShare benefits end
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A federal credit that has helped many people get through the pandemic is ending.
"People are going to wake up in early March and go, where are extra benefits?" Hunger Task Force Executive Director Sherrie Tussler said.
Tussler said that about one in four Milwaukee County households benefit from FoodShare. Since 2020, monthly FoodShare benefits have included an extra $95 intended to get people through the pandemic. Now, that extra money is being removed.
"The families are going to have a whole lot less money to purchase food. Anywhere between $90 and $132 per person, per household, is what will be available to them," Tussler said.
With food costs rising, Tussler said families are now in a tight spot.
"They may skip meals to feed their own children. They may just skip meals because they don't have enough to make ends meet," she said.
Though this extra benefit is ending, revisiting your case with FoodShare might help you get more monthly.
"It could be that they haven't reported all of their expenses. It is about both expenses and income, so if you have additional expenses, please report those to the state," Tussler explained.
Hunger Task Force tells CBS 58 they are available to help sign people up for FoodShare and to review their cases. They also provide monthly boxes full of food for seniors and have a mobile market where shoppers can buy groceries for 50% off.
