MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Shock, fear, and safety concerns were at top of mind for people in Milwaukee after reports that gunshots were fired at former President Donald Trump's rally in Pennsylvania.

With the Republican National Convention set to start Monday in Milwaukee, people say they're afraid that something similar could happen in town.

"People are really concerned about people’s safety and I think that reflects a lot about the situation right now, the tension and I think that's something we all gotta be careful about," said Tomasz Star, a frequent visitor to Milwaukee.

Star says he has many friends in town and is concerned for their safety. He's not the only one.

"1000% worried," said Illan Boico, a Milwaukee resident. "I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that somebody has to take that sort of stance at a presidential candidate because regardless of what you think, whether you vote left or whether you vote right, it is not okay to do that. Absolutely not.”

Boico says people shouldn't have to worry about their safety while expressing their political beliefs.

“At the end of the day you should not feel like you are not safe simply because you think one way or another," said Bocio. “Why would that happen in the first place. It’s not okay.”

Rick Paleski, a volunteer for the RNC, says security may be increased Monday. At Fiserv Forum, shortly after the news broke, several helicopters circled the area repeatedly and police presence also increased.

“I was worried. I was worried that this might have been a more serious injury," said Paleski. "I would expect security to get tightened.”

Boico says that's what he wants.

“All the helicopters and I’m seeing all the police officers and I think we should have more of that," said Boico.

Star says he hopes nothing like this happens again.

“I want everyone to love each other. I don’t think we have to be in a situation for everyone to spread this kind of hate one way or another," said Star.

As for Donald Trump, the Trump Campaign and RNC released the following statement:

"As was communicated earlier this evening, President Trump is doing well and grateful to law enforcement and first responders for their fast action.

President Trump looks forward to joining you all in Milwaukee as we proceed with our convention to nominate him to serve as the 47th President of the United States. As our party's nominee, President Trump will continue to share his vision to Make America Great Again.

Sincerely,

Donald J. Trump for President 2024 Senior Advisors Susie Wiles & Chris LaCivita

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley and Co-Chairman Lara Trump."
