Shipwreck in Milwaukee County added to Wisconsin Register of Historic Places

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A century-old shipwreck at the bottom of Lake Michigan is now officially on the Wisconsin Register of Historic Places.

The Transfer shipwreck is just a few miles from Port Milwaukee.

Built in 1872 and converted in 1914, the Transfer was an unpowered barge that was always towed, and carried bulk cargo across the Great Lakes. The Transfer was one of only three known converted self-unloading schooner barges documented in Wisconsin waters.

The wreck offers divers a unique experience, shedding light on the early history and economy of Wisconsin.
