Sinkhole detected on portion of Hank Aaron State Trail

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A portion of the Hank Aaron State Trail will close immediately, following the detection of a sinkhole.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) made the announcement Friday, July 14, citing recent rain that caused the sinkhole to form in the trail surface.

Officials say the trail will be closed effective immediately, between the 76th St. and 89th St. access points.

DNR staff says the hole extends multiple feet below the paved surface, posing a safety concern, and a portion of the trail will require excavation and replacement before further use.

Various alternative routes may be used. Signage for the shortest detour route will be posted at temporary barricades at the 76th and 89th St. access points and on the trail ahead of the closure.

Updates to the closure dates will be posted to the Hank Aaron State Trail property page.
