State lawmakers advance bill that would allow pharmacists to prescribe birth control

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Pharmacists would be allowed to prescribe birth control under a bill approved by lawmakers Tuesday, May 13.

The measure passed the state Assembly Tuesday with bipartisan support.

Right now, more than 25 states allow pharmacists to prescribe contraceptives.

The proposal has faced some opposition before, but the bill's author says he's confident this time it can make it to Governor Tony Evers' desk.

"I think there's a good chance the Senate will pass it this time," said State Rep. Joel Kitchens. "We've passed it three times in the Assembly. Hopefully this time will be the time it happens."

The bill was one of several health care related bills passed by the state Assembly this week.

Another proposal would require hospitals to obtain written consent from a patient before performing a pelvic exam.
