Stretch of cooler than average temperatures coming to an end

NOW: Stretch of cooler than average temperatures coming to an end
NEXT:

If you think it's been cool lately, you're exactly right! Tuesday was the first day with highs to reach the middle 70s since the beginning of the month. Even though the high hit 74 in Milwaukee, that's still below average. That makes it the 18th day in a row cooler than average and the 22nd of the last 23 days that have been below average.

Now that our cool stretch of weather has lasted over three weeks, we will start to warm up. Highs on Wednesday warm into the mid 70s. The average high is 76 right now so we could still fall just short. Thursday is even cooler in the low 70s with a NE wind. But then the streak of cool days for sure ends with highs in the low 80s for the start of the weekend.

Even though our cool stretch of weather this year is coming to an end, September 10th marks a milestone date in the world of cold weather records. The record low for the date is 39 degrees set back in 1883. That's the earliest date for the first 30s of the season. We've had a few upper 30s in some inland counties over the last week but Milwaukee stayed in the mid 40s most of those mornings.

If the recent cool weather has you thinking about abandoning the garden for the season, hold off! The average date for the first freeze of 32 degrees or colder doesn't happen for another month in October for all of southeast Wisconsin. The growing season historically lasts through Halloween in Milwaukee.
