Victims killed in Madison school shooting identified as 14-year-old student, 42-year-old teacher
MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Both the student victim and teacher killed in the shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison Monday have been identified.
According to the Dane County medical examiner, 14-year-old Rubi Vergara of Madison was one of the victims. Her obituary says she was "an avid reader, loved art, singing and playing keyboard in the family worship band."
Vergara's funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 21, at City Church in Madison.
The Dane County medical examiner identified the teacher killed as 42-year-old Erin West of DeForest. West was the substitute coordinator at Abundant Life.
According to the medical examiner, both West and Vergara died at the scene.
The Madison community mourned their losses at emotional vigils Tuesday night.
Six others were injured in the shooting, including two students who were said to be in critical condition as of Tuesday.
On Thursday, the St. Paul Lutheran Church added the names of Vergara and West to white crosses outside the school. One community member told CBS 58 she will continue to support the families any way she can.
“There’s not enough that can be said for the depth of their pain, but I hope they know that as many people as possible are trying to wrap them in love and care for them in their hour of need, and for the hours that will continue to be needed,” said the community member, who asked not to be named.
Some survivors are still fighting for their life. A Madison pastor wrote on Facebook that "One of the victims of the shooting, Samy, who endured life threatening injuries and is in critical condition."
In the post, Samy's pastor says he needs a miracle. CBS 58 did not receive an update from UW Health when asking about the survivors. We believe Samy is one of the two people who remain in critical condition.
