Superior police officer shot during traffic stop, suspect crashes car into school building

CITY OF SUPERIOR, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A City of Superior Police Department officer was injured after getting shot during a traffic stop Sunday morning, Dec. 7. 

Police say they were dispatched to a potential domestic dispute Sunday morning and before 3 a.m. Sunday, an officer conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of N. 37th St. and Tower Ave near Superior Middle School on a vehicle believed to be connected to the domestic dispute. 

The driver of the vehicle exited and shot at the officer, striking them. The officer that was shot and another officer also responding to the traffic stop, fired their guns, striking the driver. 

The officer that was shot was given aid and transported to a local hospital. They were later released. 

The driver fled the scene and crashed their vehicle into a school building. Douglas County deputies took the suspect into custody around 7 a.m. Sunday morning. 

The suspect was taken to a hospital and was later booked into the Douglas County Jail. 

No other law enforcement was injured during the incident. 

The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating the shooting.
