Suspicious powder intended for election officials intercepted at post office
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- City of Milwaukee officials say a powdery substance was found inside an envelope that was intended for an election office.
Post Office Supervisor Francis Pilon says post office officials were aware a suspicious letter with substance was enroute early this morning.
“We were able to intercept it today," said Pilon.
Around 11:15 a.m., the Milwaukee Fire Department responded to a call for hazardous material found. A hazmat team was deployed and after conducting several preliminary tests, determined nothing dangerous was identified. MFD says the substance is similar to one sent to election officials across the country.
“Every possible scenario has been considered and the city is well prepared to respond as necessary, as you can see in this situation," said Jeff Fleming with the City of Milwaukee.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) says 16 election offices across the country have reported a suspicious white powder that was intended for election officials was sent.
The FBI has stated that after further testing, none of the substances were suspicious.
MFD says this is an isolated incident and the substance will go to a law enforcement agency for further testing.
“Thankfully everything came out negative and from that point forward, they were able to seal the package and give it over," said Lt. Carlos Velazquez Sanchez with MFD.
