MILWAUKE (CBS 58) -- A 16-year-old boy is dead after being shot on Milwaukee's north side Sunday, June 2.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's office identified the teen as Shyir McCoy.

According to the Milwaukee Police Department the shooting happened just before 6:30 p.m. near 38th and Meinecke.

McCoy was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

People in this community said shootings in their neighborhood have become far too common.

"It's kind of normal now, this is not the first time I've heard gunshots," said a father of two, who didn’t want to be identified.

One neighbor said the sound of gunfire had become ambient noise in his neighborhood.

"To be over here in this neighborhood you got to be overprotective of them, can't even come outside and play like on their own," said the dad of two.

The dad of two wasn’t the only person concerned about the gun violence.

"We got people scared to come out, sit out, sat on the porch, and that park over there, no little kids need to go in that park, because they run across their shooting all the time," said 68-year-old Vivian James, who lives near where the shooting took place.

James said she is no stranger to running from stray bullets.

"I ran yesterday, and I ran a couple of weeks ago, they were over there in that same spot shooting," said James.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said more legislative work needs to be done around gun control.

"We’ve got some work to do at the state level and the federal level too in order to make sure that doesn’t happen because it has dire consequences for people on the ground in this city," said Johnson.

Despite efforts from city leaders, community members said they feel like they are fighting a losing battle

"It ain't nothing they can do, so what can they do, nobody don’t know," said James.

Sunday's shooting left behind a string of questions from community members.

"When will this stop? When will people learn and have courtesy for people in the community?"
