Milwaukee Public Museum celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, Indigenous People's Day with special October programming
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- All month long, the Milwaukee Public Museum is highlighting diversity and culture with special programming to honor Indigenous People's Day and Hispanic Heritage Month.
You can celebrate Hispanic culture all year long by visiting the Latin America exhibit, which transports you to a Mexican courtyard. But this month, you can dive even deeper during Hispanic Heritage Month.
"Our educators are going to be on the third floor talking about instruments from Latin America, and also can just provide more context to the exhibits on the third floor that are about Hispanic culture," said Madeline Anderson, the director of earned media at the museum.
From Mexico to Chile, you can learn about fiestas and immerse yourself in the culture.
For Indigenous People's Day on Monday, Oct. 10, you can learn about Native American culture from people like James Flores.
"One of our permanent exhibits is the tribute to survival gallery. Here we have a modern pow wow depicted," said Flores.
He will be on-hand to talk about Native American regalia-- like traditional moccasins. You'll be able to get an up-close look at moccasins that were made in the early 1900s. They have a variety of moccasins to showcase the differences between tribes.
"These moccasins we have for Ho Chunk were constructed a little differently. These actually were folded up and meant to be wrapped around the ankle in brushy area. It really has a lot to do with practicality."
