MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Neighbors near 3rd and Nash are demanding safety measures be put in place after a 4-year-old girl was injured in a hit-and-run accident.

The girl is in critical condition as of Friday night, Sept. 1. The driver fled the scene.

Neighbors told us she was riding a small tricycle around 5:45 p.m. Friday evening. She then got off the bike to cross the street.

MPD said that's when she was hit, and the car took off. Police are looking for the driver and a tan SUV.

This tragedy reignited concerns of safety in the community.

"All we're asking is for this community to be safe, like any other community. Just because it's not yours, that don't mean we don't matter any less," said Sonya, a neighbor who's lived near 3rd and Nash for about 30 years.

Sonya said she believes implementing speed bumps and stop signs would help the reckless driving issue in her neighborhood.

Another neighbor who did not want to be identified said she's gone to City Hall asking for speed bumps, but with no success.

According to Milwaukee Public Works, residents can now share their concerns introducing their Neighborhood Traffic Management Program.

Residents follow an eight-step process where neighbors have to fill out a form, gather signatures from the neighborhood, wait for DPW to perform a speed and traffic count, assess costs, and then the plan would have to be approved by the Common Council.

Although this process could take a while, neighbors said they are willing to do what's necessary.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Milwaukee police at 414-935-7360, or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 414-224-TIPS.
