TOWN OF CEDARBURG, Wis (CBS 58) - The Town of Cedarburg planning commission met on Wednesday night, Dec. 17, to go over plans for a private pond, proposed by two town residents.

Michael and Stacy Gauthier are looking to build a 13-acre private pond on their property near Cedar Creek.

There were three items on the agenda that would be required to be approved by the town board for the pond to be built.

The items included a rezoning plan, a mapping plan, and the building of a pond itself.

The planning commission voted to recommend that the board deny all three plans.

“Honestly it’s renewed my faith in humanity, we’ve seen so many times lately that greed, money, and power can push the line,” Town of Cedarburg resident Raquel Moscarelli said.

Members of the planning commission expressed their concerns about the pond, and how it didn’t have approval from the DNR and could lead to air or water pollution that would impact the area.

The Gauthiers did not speak at the meeting, but their lawyer did, saying “The Gauthiers have tried to do this, they haven’t done this on the quick, they’ve tried to do it the right way.”

The lawyer says they have talked to the DNR about the pond, and got a high capacity well improved, but that they were still discussing if they would take water from Cedar Creek.

“To lower anything in the water level is going to be devastating not only to the people who enjoy the creek but also to the wildlife who live there,” Town of Cedarburg resident Cindy Barlo said.

After Wednesday night the pond is still a possibility despite the commission’s recommendations to deny it and will be up to the town board for a vote.
