DELAFIELD, Wis (CBS 58) -- Two 10-year-old boys are dead and four others hurt following a high-speed pursuit and crash in Waukesha County late Wednesday, Dec. 20.

"This is an incredibly difficult event for us to learn about, it’s a difficult event for us to have law enforcement at the scene," said Sheriff Eric Severson with the Waukesha County Sheriff Office. "This didn’t need to happen."

The Waukesha County Sheriff's Office says the driver of the car was a 29-year-old man who had warrants out for his arrest.

According to officials, deputies attempted to pull over the driver for speeding near Prospect Avenue and I-94. The driver did not stop and fled at a high rate of speed before crashing near Golf Road, just east of Greywood Lane.

The driver's two 10-year-old sons were pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver's girlfriend, a 29-year-old woman, is reportedly in stable condition.

Officials say the woman's 6-year-old daughter is in critical condition, along with the driver's 14-year-old niece, who is also listed in critical condition.

The 29-year-old driver is said to be in critical but stable condition.

"The driver of the vehicle fled at such a high rate of speed that my deputies weren’t even in visual contact during the crash," said Severson.

The sheriff's office said the driver could face several charges, including driving a car after his license was suspended causing death along with two counts of reckless driving causing death.

"This kind of situation is preventable when a law enforcement gets involved in pursuits it's because people choose to elude us we don’t take any actions that would provoke someone to run from us we maintain the highest professional standards so people have trust in what we do," said Severson.

The incident is being investigated by an independent law enforcement agency, as two Waukesha County sheriff officers were directly involved in the pursuit.
