UWM to seek permission to sell chancellor's residence on Lake Drive

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee announced plans Thursday to seek permission from the Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents to sell the chancellor's residence on Lake Drive.

The university says this is part of UWM's effort to reduce costs.

At an upcoming board meeting, they will ask for permission to sell the property. If approved, UWM says the residence will be put up for public sale in the following months.

In December 2023, UWM Chancellor Mark Mone purchased and moved to a personal residence just blocks away from UWM.

“Selling the chancellor’s residence is the smart financial move for our university,” Mone said. “I was glad to be able to purchase a home just a few blocks away from campus, which allows me to be in the community and on campus even more.”

The university has been working to streamline space and reduce costs over the past few years, selling the former Alumni House in 2021 and demolishing Northwest Quad Building A and permanently closing the Purin residence hall in 2023.

The university says they also plan to demolish the old chemistry building.
