Vending machine filled with books gifted to Racine elementary school

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Jefferson Lighthouse Elementary School in Racine now has a vending machine that's filled not with candy or snacks, but with books.

They held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday, Aug. 28.

It's a gift from the PTA using surplus funds. Kids who display positive behavior in school, like acts of kindness, leadership and more, will get awards or tokens and they can use them to get a book from the machine.

"You see vending machines everywhere. Usually, they're getting a lot of junk. So, it's cool to see something that's gonna benefit the kids," said teacher Rian Rodriguez.

They hope it not only promotes good behavior, but literacy as well.
