WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The city of Wauwatosa has been awarded $1 million in federal grant funds from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration to improve the Walnut Road railroad crossing, the city announced on Monday, Jan. 13.
The city says that the funds will be used for preliminary engineering and design work to assess options for grade separation, which could include an underpass.
Officials also say that the project aims to eliminate the at-grade crossing, reducing train-vehicle crashes, improving mobility and enhancing safety.
Also, the city aims for an extended Walnut Road that is projected to handle 3,200 vehicles daily, saving travel distance and improving access to nearby facilities.
