'We're just here to be a blessing': 6th annual Breaking Bread Thanksgiving Community Feast serves Milwaukee's north side
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- With food comes fellowship. That's the purpose of a community Thanksgiving event on Milwaukee's north side.
For six years in a row, a tent has been on the corner of 35th and Center St., serving a full Thanksgiving feast to anyone in need.
"Today is about being thankful and giving back to the community," said Alderman Russell Stamper.
Love was on the menu Thursday at the 6th annual Breaking Bread Thanksgiving Community Feast.
"Really just seeing the smiles on the kids face, the people's face, knowing that they got a meal, and they don't have to go through red tape to get it," said Farina Brooks, the founder of Dream Team United MKE.
"It shows that people care," said Theresa Brookens as she picked up a plate.
Dream Team United MKE works with sponsors to provide hot thanksgiving meals, groceries, and winter coats.
"When we first started it, I would say we maybe had a hundred people. We had very few coats, very few groceries," Brooks said. "Then over the years, it's blown into all of this."
More and more people stop by each year, emphasizing the need in the neighborhood.
"As you can see, people need food. People need resources. People need assistance, and I'm so thankful that I'm able to provide that," Ald. Stamper said.
"It really warms my heart to know that we can affect that many people," Brooks said.
Six years later, the organizers say they'll keep doing it as long as the need is there.
"Let them understand and know, hey, we love you guys. We don't care what your situation is. We don't care your circumstance," Brooks said. "We're just here to be a blessing."
