'We're still present, we're surviving': Native Heritage Celebration honors the indigenous tribes of Wisconsin
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Today's Native Heritage Celebration showcased all 11 federally recognized indigenous tribes in Wisconsin, their uniqueness and their common connection.
The event took over the grounds outside of the Marcus Performing Arts Center today, Sept. 26. It began this morning with a special presentation for students, a live performance from indigenous hip hop artist, Supaman.
The celebration's main focus is a 'living village' lined with community organizations and representatives from local tribes, teaching about traditional food, regalia, music and history.
The first-time event is a chance for organizers to honor our state as home to one of the largest concentrations of Native American tribes.
"Our larger goal is to represent the indigenous community in an authentic way to show we're still here, we're still present, we're surviving, we're thriving, this is our resilience and this is a testament to it," said Averie Anderson of the planning committee.
The celebration continues with a presentation at the Peck Pavilion - with traditional smudging, a youth drum circle and panel discussions. Plus another live hip hop performance.
