'I am very thankful': West Allis grocer reports surge in Thanksgiving catering orders
WEST ALLIS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Thanksgiving preparations for many typically begin in grocery store aisles. However, this year, a growing number of people are choosing a different approach: catered meals that require no cooking, no mess and no cleanup.
Rupena’s Fine Foods, a family-owned grocery and catering business in West Allis, is experiencing a surge in demand for its holiday meal orders. Owner Maria Rupena says the response has been overwhelming.
"As of today, no more orders: we cut it off because we are full. We’re full to the brim. I am very thankful. I’m very humble," Rupena said.
The business also offers complete catering services. All of the traditional Thanksgiving dishes will be ready for pickup next week, with staff members are currently hard at work preparing the meals.
"This is the final rush," said Brian Pfeifer, Rupena’s meat department manager. "Especially starting on Monday, it’s gonna be a complete madhouse. People are gonna be trying to get in their last-minute orders. We’ll be filling existing orders we’ve been taking for the last month, so it’s trying to work your way through the madness of those two things as they meet head-on."
Rupena said the popularity of their catering services reflects a shift in priorities.
"I think the world is so fast, and people don’t even know what day it is; it happens to me. So, I think having things brought in is easier, of course, but it also allows them to have that family time, and it’s just not so stressful," she said.
While Rupena’s is no longer taking orders for full holiday meals, its hot food section will have select items available for pickup on Wednesday.
Other grocery stores and restaurants are also offering Thanksgiving meal options. Calling ahead to confirm availability is recommended.
