When should outdoor Christmas decorations come down?
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- As the glow of the holiday season fades, one question lingers for many homeowners: how long is too long to leave outdoor Christmas decorations up? While indoor décor often lingers as a personal choice, outdoor displays are a bit more public—and neighbors definitely notice.
Traditionally, decorations come down around Twelfth Night (Jan. 5 or 6), marking the end of the Christmas season. But outdoor lights and inflatables often stay up well beyond that, sometimes even into February or March.
While there’s no hard rule, it’s worth considering the message extended holiday displays might send. A few weeks into the new year, festive lights can still bring cheer. But by late January, they can start to feel out of place—especially as Valentine’s Day décor starts popping up. Neighbors might view lingering decorations as a sign of neglect or simply as an eyesore, especially if displays are weather-worn or no longer lit.
Of course, some communities are more relaxed than others. If you live in a neighborhood where extended displays are common or where lights brighten long winter nights, keeping them up a bit longer may be welcomed. Still, a good general guideline is to take outdoor decorations down by mid-to-late January.
Some people have outfitted their house with permanent lights-- these can change colors and never need to come down. They can be professionally installed or do-it-yourself. Having them installed for you can include some upfront cost, $2,000-$5,000 depending on the size of your house.
In the end, being mindful of seasonal timing—and of your neighbors—goes a long way. After all, part of the holiday spirit is spreading joy, not frustration.
