Whitefish Bay Art Fest showcases artists from across the country
CBS 58 WHITEFISH BAY, Wis. (CBS 58) — Thousands of people made their way through the Whitefish Bay Art Fest to admire the work of artists from across the country.
“I have repeat customers that find me in the same spot every year," said Tom Smith, a Wauwatosa artist.
For the past five years, Smith has had his artwork on display at the Whitefish Bay Art Fest.
"Well, I do mostly plein air painting," said Smith. "It’s a French term meaning open air, so you pack up all your equipment, your easel, your paints, and you go outside and you decide a scene or subject you’re interested in. You just sit yourself down and get your gear out and start painting."
Battling severe anxiety and depression, Smith says art helped save his life, and now he's grateful to share his passion with his community.
"I just enjoy creating beauty," said Smith. "I’m not trying to make a political statement. I’m just trying to paint what I really enjoy."
One hundred artists set up shop in the heart of the village, expressing themselves in their own unique ways.
"This festival is definitely a tradition for people in the Milwaukee area and greater Milwaukee area," said Amy Amdur, the director of Whitefish Bay Art Fest. "We have people who become collectors of particular artists because they come every year, and every year they buy another piece, so that’s pretty special."
Artists came from across the country to enjoy all the greater Milwaukee area has to offer.
“We love Wisconsin,” said Gina Krawez, an artist from Alabama.
Many hoped to leave their mark.
"I really love to see the impact it has of intense color and the psychological aspect of that," said Krawez.
All while inspiring the next generation along the way.
"I get kids coming in here and say, 'Are you an artist?'" said Smith. "I encourage them. Get organized and practice."
