Wisconsin Black Media Association unveils new name at Milwaukee's Juneteenth Parade
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Black Media Association walked in Milwaukee's Juneteenth Parade on Wednesday, June 19 and the occasion to reveal its new name: NABJ-Milwaukee.
The group chose the celebration, honoring the end of slavery in America, as the occasion for the reveal.
A press release from the organization notes that the name change aligns the local chapter more closely with its national organization, the National Association of Black Journalists.
"The Wisconsin Black Media Association has served us well since 1979," said Tannette Johnson-Elie, president of NABJ-Milwaukee. "Our new name continues to help strengthen NABJ’s brand and impact across the country."
NABJ-Milwaukee says that their goal is to enhance access to the field of communications for students and professionals of color in across the state of Wisconsin. The organization provides professional development, community engagement and youth programs, such as journalism workshops and scholarships.
The organization also hosts the Honoring Our Own program, which recognizes extraordinary accomplishments through awards such as the Legacy Award and the Eric Von Community Service Award.
