Wisconsin Elections Commission finds probable cause Musk violated law in giving $1M checks to voters
CBS 58 MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Elections Commission (WEC) has referred a complaint against Elon Musk to prosecutors in Brown County after concluding the tech billionaire probably broke state law when he gave out a pair of $1 million checks last year.
A WEC spokesperson confirmed Tuesday, July 14, the commission voted 5-1 during the closed session of its meeting last week to refer the case to Brown County District Attorney David Lasee.
The referral stems from Musk's actions during the 2025 state Supreme Court race. WEC received two complaints about a social media post Musk made, offering a $1 million prize to people who voted in that election.
At a campaign event in Green Bay, Musk gave checks to two voters, each worth $1 million each.
Musk was supporting conservative candidate Brad Schimel, who lost in a landslide to the liberal candidate, Susan Crawford.
CBS 58 reached out to Lasee for comment. He did not immediately respond to questions about the WEC referral.
