Wisconsin firefighters rescue dog stuck in ice

PESHTIGO, Wis. (CBS 58) -- First responders in Marinette County experienced their first ice rescue of the season to save a dog.

Calvin, an Australian Shepherd, broke through thin ice over the Peshtigo River while chasing geese on Monday, Dec. 5 at around 10:00 a.m. He ended up more than 200 feet from shore in freezing waters.

Firefighters responded by quickly utilizing an inflatable rescue boat to help reach the dog.

Chuck Gordon, the City of Peshtigo's Fire Chief, described the scene by saying, "One of the captains from the town of Peshtigo and a lieutenant from our department jumped on board, grabbed some paddles and started breaking the ice and going out to the dog."

After Calvin was rescued successfully, first responders have taken time to warn people throughout Wisconsin to avoid walking on the ice during winter. Those planning on ice fishing are urged to check conditions ahead of time to avoid more icy situations like the one Calvin experienced.
