PORTAGE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- An update to a story CBS 58 first told you about in February. A little girl from Portage who set out to collect more than six million pop tabs got a huge response from the community.
Mercedes Alves was collecting the tabs in honor of her brother who was killed in a car accident. Thanks to people around the country she exceeded her goal collecting more than ten million pop tabs but they're not stopping now.
“Lisa Thompson, the young lady who helped us, her son was killed in Afghanistan, so she's gonna donate all her tabs next year in Gunner's name and Daniel's name and we're gonna donate them to the fallen vets,” said Mercedes dad Joseph Alves.
The pop tabs from this collection were donated to the Ronald McDonald house.
